What is IFSC?

The Indian Financial System Code (IFS Code or IFSC) is an alphanumeric code to facilitate electronic funds transfer in India. This code is unique for each bank branch. It helps the banks to maintain payments in India. There are three major ways for monetary transition in India, those are National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), and Immediate Payment Service (IMPS).

IFSC Format

The IFSC is an 11-character unique code for each Indian Bank. The first four alphabetic characters represent the bank name and the last six characters (usually numeric, but can be alphabetic) represent the branch. The fifth character is 0 (zero) in middle and reserved for future use. Bank IFS Code is used by the NEFT & RTGS systems to route the messages to the destination banks/branches.

The format of the IFS Code is shown below.
